In a Nutshell:

This economic evaluation of the Whole Systems Demonstrator telehealth questionnaire study concludes that telehealth does not seem to be a cost effective addition to standard support and treatment.  The original study included 3230 people with a long term condition (heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or diabetes).

 

 

 

 


Volitional pursed lips breathing in patients with stable COPD improves exercise capacity

In a Nutshell: A study looking at how Pursed Lip Breathing (PLB) is used by a proportion of patients with COPD to alleviate dyspnea. It is also commonly used in pulmonary rehabilitation and shows how PLB has an acute benefit with sustained PLB or short bursts of PLB improving exercise capacity in stable COPD.

In a Nutshell: This study shows the importance of understanding patient preferences for prescribing when choosing an inhaler device for Asthma or COPD  and may help to individualise therapy better, impacting upon and influencing adherence and concerns about medication.


Effect of telehealth on quality of life and psychological outcomes

In a nutshell: This trial assessed the effect of second generation, home based telehealth on health related quality of life, anxiety, and depressive symptoms over 12 months in patients with long term conditions.  The researchers suggest that home based telehealth was not effective compared with usual care only.
