In a nutshell: Description of a pilot funded by the British Lung Foundation to evaluate the potential of using telephone contact to reach people who are undiagnosed and most at risk of COPD.  The data indicated that 62 per cent of the population of South Tyneside was more at risk of future hospital admission with COPD than the UK average.   The BLF approached South Tyneside PCT, to run a campaign alongside the telemarketing pilot to raise awareness of COPD and encourage early diagnosis among at risk groups.  The Love Your Lungs campaign was launched.  The post event evaluation showed that awareness of the causes of COPD was increased and the message was being passed on.  Love your Lungs is currently being replicated in two other primary care trust areas, and the BLF team are sharing their learning, data strategy and targeted approach with healthcare organisations across the country.

In a nutshell: This research from the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a social marketing model on case-finding for COPD in a population with high smoking rates and COPD prevalence. A two-week marketing campaign was conducted using high visibility posters, leaflets distributed with the local newspaper, and the creation of a free automated COPD information line.  the authors conclude that “This form of healthcare marketing was costly and not effective for COPD case-finding in our area.”
