In a nutshell: Asthma is the most prevalent chronic condition affecting children and a common complaint in emergency departments (EDs). This study aimed to improve parents’ understanding of their child’s asthma severity by including a visual severity scale on their discharge instructions. Postdischarge telephone interviews were completed to determine postintervention follow-up rates and results showed that by using this simple intervention it significantly improved the follow-up rates for children seen in the ED for asthma exacerbation
